The gradual removal of old wax and its strategic replacement are essential to safeguarding the health of the brood in the face of impurities that have accumulated over the course of the season.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beefeed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/API_Du_Mois_09-2023-Mathieu.jpg\" alt=\"Mathieu Domecq\"\/><\/figure>\n\n \n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center has-text-color has-background has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-1\" id=\"h-les-travaux-du-mois\" style=\"border-style:none;border-width:0px;border-radius:40px;color:#6c3b0d;background-color:#ffdb00;line-height:1.2\"><strong>This month&#8217;s work<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">October marks the definitive arrival of autumn at the apiary. The days are getting shorter, the temperatures are dropping and the bees\u2019 activity is slowing down significantly. As preparations for wintering draw to a close, the beekeeper must make sure to carry out the very final adjustments to ensure the colonies can rest through the winter. This is the very last opportunity to tend to the hives and secure them before the first severe cold spells arrive.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are the essential tasks to carry out at the apiary during October:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong style=\"font-size: 1.2em; text-decoration: underline;\">The final autumn inspection<\/strong>: Check the condition of the colonies one last time on a mild day (above 15\u00b0C). This involves checking for the presence of the queen and observing the development of winter bees through the presence of a healthy, compact brood. After this period, opening the hives should be avoided so as not to chill the brood.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong style=\"font-size: 1.2em; text-decoration: underline;\">Top up food reserves<\/strong>: Ensure the hive is heavy enough (around 10 to 15 kg of honey in reserve). This is often the last month in which to provide syrup-based feed such as Apiinvert. After that, Apifonda-type candy could take over if emergency supplementation is still required, as the bees are no longer able to absorb and digest cold syrup.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center has-text-color has-background has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-2\" id=\"h-les-fleurs-melliferes-du-mois\" style=\"border-style:none;border-width:0px;border-radius:40px;color:#6c3b0d;background-color:#ffdb00;line-height:1.2\"><strong>This month\u2019s nectar-bearing flowers<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ivy (the season\u2019s main source of pollen and nectar), late mustard and arbutus.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-3 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"border-style:none;border-width:0px;border-radius:40px;color:#6c3b0d;background-color:#ffdb00;font-size:1.1em;line-height:1.2\"><a href=\"2\">Read more on page 2<\/a><\/p>\n\n \n\n<!--nextpage-->\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center has-text-color has-background has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-4\" id=\"h-la-cire-un-impact-sur-la-sante-des-abeilles\" style=\"border-style:none;border-width:0px;border-radius:40px;color:#6c3b0d;background-color:#ffdb00;line-height:1.2\"><strong>Wax: an impact on bee health<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Within the hive, beeswax is not merely a building material: it forms the skeleton of the colony. It is on this precious substrate that the queen lays her eggs, the brood develops, and honey and pollen are stored. However, due to its properties (it absorbs fats), beeswax acts like a sponge. Over the course of the seasons, it binds and accumulates external pollutants such as pesticides and residues from veterinary treatments used against Varroa mites.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This invisible pollution has a direct impact on the viability of the apiary. When beeswax becomes saturated with toxic molecules, it weakens the bees\u2019 immune system, disrupts larval development and can shorten the queen\u2019s lifespan. The problem is exacerbated if the beekeeper uses poor-quality wax sheets, sometimes mixed with paraffin or industrial fats, which further degrades the structure of the honeycomb and impairs brood development.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"908\" height=\"546\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beefeed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/API_du_mois_Oct2026_pic1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20791\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.beefeed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/API_du_mois_Oct2026_pic1.jpg 908w, https:\/\/www.beefeed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/API_du_mois_Oct2026_pic1-767x461.jpg 767w, https:\/\/www.beefeed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/API_du_mois_Oct2026_pic1-300x180.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 908px) 100vw, 908px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Introduce new frames to your hive every year<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When buying wax, make sure you know where it comes from. Wax whose origin and health history you are aware of will minimise any risk once it has been introduced into your hives.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Considering these risks, rigorous wax management is essential as a preventative measure. To break the cycle of residue build-up, beekeepers must ensure their frames are regularly replaced, ideally changing two to three frames from the hive body each year. Keeping old frames for several years exposes the colony to constant contamination.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The best strategy for ensuring flawless wax is based on the self-renewal of the wax. Using the cap wax when extracting honey allows you to reintroduce a healthy, chemical-free material into your own system. Do not waste your wax.
